Pig Iron. Pig iron is the basic material from which, wrought iron and steels are produced. It is obtained by smelting (chemical reduction) of iron ore in the blast furnace. In addition to iron, Pig iron contains varying quantities of other elements such as carbon, silicon, manganese, sulphur and phosphorus.
Pig Iron Manufacturing Process. At the beginning of the use of the electric furnace, for the manufacture of calcium carbide and ferroalloys, experimental work was conducted in it upon the production of steel from iron ore.
Pig iron is a Fe based alloy generally having a carbon content of 45 percent, containing other elements too and produced by a metallurgical process from iron ores. It is an intermediate product, which is the base material of steelmaking. Raw materials required for production: iron ore pellet, sinter, flux, blast furnace coke.
Molten iron that was run out of the blast furnaces and cooled in the main channel and adjoining molds became referred to as pig iron because the large, central and adjoining smaller ingots resembled a sow and suckling piglets.

The haematite is widely used for the production of pig iron. Since pyrite contains only 30 to 40% iron, therefore it is not used for manufacturing pig iron. The pig iron is obtained from the iron ores in the following steps: 1. Concentration. It is the process of removing the impurities like clay, sand etc. from the iron ore by washing with water. 2.
